SV alumna Vanessa Fraser helps break world record in 100×1 mile relay in SF

Former Scotts Valley High and Stanford University standout Vanessa Fraser was among the 100 women who set a world record in the 100×1 mile relay in San Francisco on Saturday.

The women, who ranged in age from 13 to 63, each ran one mile at an average pace of 5:35 to set the mark at San Francisco State's Cox Stadium.

They completed the race in an unofficial overall time of 9 hours, 18 minutes, and 32 seconds. The group beat the previous record of 9:23:39, set by the Canadian Women's Milers Club in 1999, by more than five minutes.

Fraser, a professional runner for the Nike Bowerman Track Club who lives and trains in San Francisco, ran the first leg in 4:58. She passed the baton to JoJo Gregg, 13, the youngest racer, who ran a 5:46 mile. The final runner, Peggy Lavelle, closed with a 7:48 mile while being cheered on by her teammates.

"The collective power of the women's running community is magical," said Fraser, in a post on her Instagram page. "Thank you @sfwomenmilers."

Golden West Invitational: Aptos High alum Trent Nosky took second in the mile race at the 63rd annual Golden West Invitational at Cordova High in Rancho Cordova on Saturday.

Nosky, who will run for NCAA Division I Colorado State University's cross country and track and field programs as a recruited walk-on, finished his race in 4:13.25. Eli Fitchen-Young, who completed his sophomore year at Santa Cruz, took seventh in 4:17.04.

Aptos’ Rylan Sampson took 11th in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet.

Levitre up for HOF honor: Former Oregon State University offensive lineman Andy Levitre was named to the 2024 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced Monday.

Levitre, a San Lorenzo Valley High alum, was a four-year letterman for the Beavers from 2005-08, after he redshirted in ’04. He assisted the Beavers to a record of 33-18, including 27-12 as a starter, and three bowl victories. The Beavers finished in the final Associated Press Poll each of his final three seasons, which culminated with Sun Bowl victories over Missouri and Pittsburgh, and an Emerald Bowl win over Maryland.

He earned All-America honors from the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association, and Pro Football Weekly as a senior.

Inkster to be honored: Santa Cruz native Juli Inkster, 62, and the late Tom Weiskopf were chosen as Honorees for the 2024 Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.

Inkster, a Harbor High and San Jose State alumna, is a seven-time major champion and World Golf Hall of Fame member. Weiskopf, am Ohio native who died of pancreatic cancer last August, was a 16-time winner on the PGA Tour and 1973 Open champion.

Inkster and Weiskopf will be celebrated during the Honoree Ceremony on Wednesday of Tournament week at Muirfield Village Golf Club. The two legends become the 82nd and 83rd individuals chosen to receive this prestigious recognition presented annually on the eve of the Memorial Tournament.

U.S. Women's Open qualifying: Stanford's Kelly Xu and LSU's Aine Donegan advanced from the 36-hole U.S. Women's Open qualifier at The Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo on Monday.

Xu earned medalist honors with 1-under-par 141 total, and Donegan finished four strokes back to claim second.

The U.S. Women's Open will be held at Pebble Beach Golf Links the first time July 6-9.

Torado named Cabrillo coach: Cabrillo has hired former UC Santa Cruz star Branden Torado as its new women's volleyball coach.

Torado, a Sacramento native and Jesuit High alum, was a four-year standout for the NCAA Division III Banana Slugs from 2012-15, making it to three NCAA Tournaments. He is the program's all-time leader in hitting percentage and graduated in the top five in career blocks and aces.

Torado has coached youth volleyball programs in Santa Cruz, including Main Beach Volleyball Club, since 2015. He served as a special education teacher for Pajaro Valley Unified School District from 2016-21.

Lake Berryessa Swim: Santa Cruz Masters Swimming turned in several stellar performances at the 39th annual Davis Aquatic Masters Lake Berryessa Open Water Swim on Saturday in Napa.

In the one-mile swim, Cruz's Danielle Becks (24:45; 40-44 division) and Joel Wilson (26:14; 75-79) took first in their respective age divisions.

In the two-mile swim, Cruz's Tesla Profumo (45:31; 45-49 division) and Wilson (1:14:03) finished atop their age group.
