FRANKLIN – For the first time, a group of relay runners will be honored as Gateway Tire Athletes of the Week.

Centennial High School's Rhys Ammon, Bethany Wright, Larkin Johnson and Gabrielle Boulay were named the Gateway Tire Female Athletes of the Week after setting a new 4X800 meter relay state record, breaking a mark set in 1979. The foursome join Thomas Fields, the Brentwood soccer goalkeeper, the Male Athlete of the Week.

The five Spring Fling stars were chosen as part of the Athletes of the Week awards sponsored by Garth Bouldin of Gateway Tire & Service Center in Franklin for the week. Each week, athletes from Williamson County are selected and featured in the Williamson Herald throughout the school year.

They are invited to be recognized on Monday, June 5 at 6 p.m. as part of the live "WillCo Sports Power Hour" broadcast heard on WAKM AM-950 and online from Tony's Eat and Drink in Franklin. The weekly show has two more broadcasts for the school year.

The Centennial girls – a team of five – finished fourth overall in the Class AAA state track and field championships, anchored by the 4X800 relay's record-setting run. The girls finished in 9 minutes, 6.03 seconds to break a record set by Farragut (9:15.70) 44 years earlier.

"I’m utterly amazed at the heart they showed for this," Centennial track coach Samuel Ridley said. "They wanted to go out and do their best and we just left it up to them to go out and perform.

"It's amazing. Just amazing."

Beyond the relay, anchor-leg runner Boulay also repeated as the 800 champion, finishing in 2:13.66, while Ammon was fifth (2:18.72). Johnson, the freshman of the group, was runner-up in the 3,200 (11:00.16) and also placed seventh in the 1,600 (5:07.83) during a busy lap-filled day. Jumper Ryan Moore, who took third in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 1-inch, rounded out the Cougars memorable day.

"These girls are just so impressive," Ridley said. "I’m so proud."

Fields and the Bruins repeated as Class AAA champions and completed a perfect 25-0 season to go with the title as well as a national, No. 1 ranking.

Fields, a senior, produced two shutout victories in three matches at the state tournament. Brentwood opened with a 1-0 win against fellow nationally-ranked Bearden. He made six saves in the victory and added three more in a 3-2 win over Bartlett in the semis before preserving a 3-0 shutout championship win – Brentwood's 12th shutout of the season.

Fields was quick to give his backline credit.

"I owe the success to those guys – I mean, Chuck (Charlie Snider), Aidan Wells, CK (Cooper Koerlin) – guys like that just played amazing all season," Fields said.

For the season, Brentwood outscored opponents 99-14 with the dozen shutouts and only two matches where multiple goals were allowed. They trailed once, against the repeat Alabama state champions back in March, before rolling to a 4-1 win. In all, Brentwood defeated four defending state champions in their march toward a second consecutive state title this season.

"That's a magical run right there," Fields said.
